출애굽기는 구약성경에서 가장 흥미진진한 기적들이 가득한 책입니다. 바닷물이 갈라져 육지가 드러나고, 그 위를 수백만 명의 노예들이 걸어서 탈출하는 이야기; 위험이 가득하고 식량조차 구하기 힘든 광야에서의 40년 동안, 하루도 빠짐없이 하늘에서 만나와 메추라기가 내려와 수백만명 중 단 한 명도 배고픔을 겪지 않았던 이야기; 낮에는 구름기둥, 밤에는 불기둥이 이스라엘 민족 앞에서 황량한 광야 길을 인도했던 이야기 등 어린아이들도 쉽게 머릿속에 그려볼 수 있는 생생하고 놀라운 기적에 관한 이야기, 그림들로 가득합니다.

더 놀라운 것은, 이 모든 일들이 단 한 민족—하나님을 찾지도 않고 믿지도 않던—정확히 말하면 아직 나라를 형성하기는 커녕 노예살이 중이던 히브리인들을 위한 기적들이었다는 사실입니다. 그렇다면 왜 하나님은 이처럼 미약하고 하나님께 무관심했던 히브리 노예들을 종살이에서 건지시기로 작정하셨을까요? 게다가 그들의 노력이나 투쟁을 통해서가 아니라, 오직 하나님의 능력만으로 세상의 어떤 강대국도 경험한 적 없고, 할 수도 없는 기적들을 통해 애굽을 탈출하게 하셨을까요? 이런 궁금증을 가지고 출애굽기를 읽다 보면, 그 종착지는 하나님께서 이스라엘 민족 가운데 거하시겠다며 지으라고 하신 성막, 더 나아가 성막 안에서도 대제사장만 들어갈 수 있는 가장 거룩한 곳, 지성소, 그리고 그 지성소에서도 하나님께서 “거기서 너와 만나겠다”고 하신 속죄소가 됩니다.

모든 것이 완벽했던 에덴동산에서 범죄한 인간이 쫓겨날 때 잃어버린 것—창조주 하나님과의 교제, 그분의 임재 가운데 거하는 것, 그분의 영광을 보는 것—이 모든 것이 회복되어 죄인이 거룩하신 하나님을 만나 교제할 수 있게 되는 것. 그것이 바로 하나님께서 이 모든 놀라운 일들을 행하신 이유였습니다. 

출애굽기는 단순히 이스라엘 민족의 역사책만이 아닙니다. 하나님이 친히 그리신 큰 그림, 복음의 청사진(blueprint) 입니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 민족의 역사 속에 그분의 구원 계획을 선명하게 그려 넣으셨습니다. 그리고 이 복음의 큰 그림은 후에 예수 그리스도의 성육신으로 구체화되고, 그분의 십자가 고난과 부활을 통해 완전히 성취되었습니다.

이번 수양회 말씀2 시간을 통해 하나님께서 출애굽기에 그려 넣으신 복음 이야기를 함께 묵상하며, 우리 모두가 하나님의 임재 가운데 거하는 은혜를 경험하고, 예수 그리스도의 영광과 중보사역을 바라보며 감사와 찬양을 돌리는 시간이 되기를 소망합니다.

Exodus – A Portrait of the Gospel

​

Exodus is one of the most thrilling and miracle-filled books in the Old Testament. It tells the story of the sea parting to reveal dry land so that millions of slaves could escape on foot; the story of how, for forty years in a dangerous and barren wilderness where food was hard to find, manna and quail came down from heaven every single day—so that not one among the millions went hungry; the story of a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night guiding the Israelites through the desolate desert. These are vivid and astonishing miracles, filled with scenes that even children can easily picture in their minds.

What’s even more amazing is that all of this was done for a single group of people—Hebrew slaves who neither sought God nor believed in Him. In fact, they were so insignificant that it would be hard even to call them a “nation.” So why did God choose to rescue these weak and indifferent Hebrew slaves from bondage? And why did He do it not through their efforts or battles, but through miraculous acts that no world power had ever seen or could possibly accomplish—solely by His own power?

If we read Exodus with these questions in mind, the story ultimately leads us to the Tabernacle, which God commanded the Israelites to build so that He might dwell among them. At the heart of the Tabernacle is the Holy of Holies, the most sacred place, which only the high priest could enter. And within the Holy of Holies lies the Mercy Seat, where God said, “There I will meet with you.”

What was lost when sinful humanity was cast out of the perfect Garden of Eden—the fellowship with the Creator God, dwelling in His presence, and beholding His glory—all of this is restored so that sinners can once again meet and commune with the holy God. That is the very reason God performed all these marvelous works.

Exodus is not merely a history book of Israel. It is the grand design—the blueprint—of the gospel, drawn by God Himself. Through the history of Israel, God clearly revealed His plan of salvation. And this gospel blueprint was later fulfilled through the incarnation of Jesus Christ, and fully accomplished through His suffering on the cross and His resurrection.

Through the second message of this retreat, may we reflect deeply on the gospel story God has revealed into Exodus. And may we all experience the grace of dwelling in His presence, behold the glory and intercessory work of Jesus Christ, and respond with heartfelt gratitude and praise.
